CAREERS AT NEW MILLS

At New Mills School our careers programme provides our students with a well-rounded education in careers, and provides them understanding on how to empower themselves with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to pursue their ambitions and achieve their dreams, developing the necessary skills and tools to succeed in life beyond the classrooms here at New Mills School.

As a school we have a statutory and moral duty to provide students in Years 8 - 11 with information, advice and guidance and this is extended in New Mills School to include Year 7, as we believe that quality CEIAG (Careers Education, Information and Guidance) should be available to all students.

We aim to provide students and those supporting at home with the information required to make strong choices about their own futures, whilst encouraging all to set achievable aspirational goals.

At New Mills School we plan activities, experiences and learning opportunities for our students around the 8 Gatsby Benchmarks:

1: A stable careers programme
2: Learning from career and labour market information
3: Addressing the needs of each pupil
4: Linking curriculum learning to careers
5: Encounters with employers and employees
6: Experiences of workplaces
7: Encounters with further and higher education
8: Personal guidance

Assessing Impact

Why we evaluate – This careers programme is evaluated every year to assess its efficacy and areas for improvement. Key stakeholders (scholars, parents, teachers and employers) provide feedback on their participation in activities via questionnaires, surveys and focus groups throughout the year. We use the evidence collected to inform continuous improvement of the programme.

How we evaluate – New Mills School have an evaluation stakeholder group, whose purpose it is to provide a well balance view on the quality of the careers offer to scholars. The group is chaired by the school’s Headteacher, Mrs Heather Watts and her SLT.  They meet once a year to review the evidence collected during the school year and consider their subjective experience and engagement with the programme. The careers leader creates an evidence pack for members of the group in advance of the annual evaluation meeting.

The school careers leader combines their own knowledge, evidence and information with that from the stakeholder group and provides a short report with recommendations to SLT towards the end of the summer term.

What we evaluate
Stakeholder Feedback – We review samples of stakeholder feedback collected using various methods after activities, events and experiences.
Implementation – We review what was actually delivered against the programme of planned activity and how well it went.
Impact -We measure key performance indicators linked directly to our vision and desired outcomes for our scholars.
